04 Building the systems

Already my brain is filled with ideas for the many worlds and starports. In the sector we have 22 systems that need to be built (which I did by hand, rolling 2d6... my goodness it took longer than expected) and after all of the dice rolling these are the results:


That's a lot of information isn't it? Let's take this one piece at a time. My idea for having two polities on the left would still work nicely with the single planet (E0007CC-3) acting as a neutral zone between the north and south that was, in the past, bombed to all hell and lost it's atmosphere.

The next hurdle is access to ships. In Classic Traveller the minimum tech level (TL) to create spaceships is 7, but in order to create starships (that can jump) you need tech level 9. So for our idea of a north/south empire, we need each area to be have access to TL9 tech. That shouldn't be too difficult as there are one or two worlds that are TL7/8 which we could easily just bump up to 9 or 10.

After I spent some time rubbing my chin on the ins-and-outs of the planets on the left, my attention was drawn to the scattered worlds on the right. More exclusively, the two worlds in the top right with TL 10 and 11. Let's bring them into the picture and have ourselves a third polity that has expanded to the three worlds beneath it.

Once I'd stopped getting excited about higher tech levels, my attention was drawn to just how many TL3 worlds we had. TL3, for those curious, is equivalent to the Age of Sail (some sources say it's closer to the Medeival Era, others closer to Industrial Revolution with steam. I'm happy to remain flexible on the matter). As two of these worlds (in the middle of the map, C36069A-3 and E252988-3) could well be stepping stones between the left and right-hand side of the map I certainly would like some form of Port. I know I want to drop one of the Starport's quality to a D, but for other decisions I just left a little deflated. An idea will come to me eventually, I'm sure of it. Should I add another couple of planets to fill the void in the middle? Before I get too carried away, this is where we're at right now:


Next step will be tidying up the sector map and looking at who these coloured pocket empires are.

  1. Looks good with a gap in the middle. I think adding more would make the TLs have to change. Also the Orange line in between seems unnecessary.
